Spheres of influence
Ten players who will determine the NFL playoff race

If we learned one important thing from the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, it's that a struggling team can turn into a Super Bowl champion as soon as Thanksgiving passes. That's why these next five weeks will tell us everything we need to know about who belongs in the postseason and who doesn't. Has this season been unpredictable so far? Damn right. But as one NFL coach once told me, the best part about a 16-game season is that the good teams eventually rise above the pack while the bad ones generally fade away. The key is figuring out what factors will impact the rising and the falling.
With that in mind, here's my list of 10 players who will have the biggest influence on the playoff race as the season winds to a close:
1. Larry Johnson: For all the attention San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson has garnered in what should be an MVP season, Johnson has been nearly as dazzling over the last month and a half. The Kansas City Chiefs running back leads the league in rushing (1,202 yards) and he's been thriving behind a patchwork offensive line. Think about it: The Chiefs lost Pro Bowl left tackle Willie Roaf to retirement and they've had three other starters go down at various times this season (Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters and offensive tackles Kyle Turley and Kevin Sampson). But somehow the Chiefs keep opening holes for Johnson, and that's helped keep them alive. Now that Kansas City is 7-4 and locked in a second-place tie with Denver in the AFC West, you can expect Johnson to maintain his current pace.
2. Tatum Bell: If the Denver Broncos expect rookie quarterback Jay Cutler to guide them to a playoff run in these final five games, he's going to need more help than what his benched predecessor, Jake Plummer, received during the first 11 games. As much as people want to focus on Plummer's failings, the reality is that Denver's once vaunted running game hasn't done much this season. The absence of Bell -- who's been plagued by two turf toe injuries over the last three weeks -- has been especially problematic. He's the Broncos' most proven and explosive runner when healthy and could have a huge impact on the playoff race. When he returns, the Broncos have a better chance of producing more consistency on the ground and easing the pressure on Cutler. If Bell stays out even longer, we might finally have some evidence that not everybody can thrive behind Denver's offensive line.
3. Eli Manning: It's time to stop hyping this third-year New York Giants quarterback and to begin accepting that he's not destined for greatness. All Manning is at this stage is a good player who needs to work hard to become a better one. In fact, I can't remember the last time he made a big play in a game that mattered in the second half of a season. He's thrown six interceptions and two touchdown passes during the Giants' current three-game losing streak and he bottomed out at the end of last year as well. Let's face it: He needs to step up his game big time if the Giants hope to stay in the race. If his name were Eli Wagstaff, we'd be talking about him with the same uncertainty we apply to Houston's David Carr.
